Seven Times

Then Peter came up and said to Jesus,
“Rabbi, how often can my brother
sin against me and I have to
forgive him? Seven times?”
“No, not seven times,” answered
Jesus, “but seventy times seven.”

Are you one who keeps a record
Of the slights you have received?
Do you keep a strict accounting
Of the ways you’ve been aggrieved?

Seven times. It’s not a number
But an attitude of grace.
Seven times. In full measure.
Restoration, face to face.

Do you struggle to remember
Everyone who’s caused you harm?
Do you hasten to remind them
With a list long as you arm?

Seven times. It’s not a number
But an attitude of grace.
Seven times. In full measure.
Restoration, face to face.

Let it go, and learn forgiveness.
Let it go, and find release.
Let it go, and help your brother.
Let it go, and offer peace.

Seven times. It’s not a number
But an attitude of grace.
Seven times. In full measure.
Restoration, face to face.
