Rejected

How could You bear it?
To watch us reject You.
Over and over
We go our own way.

I will eat the fruit.
I will offer what’s left.
I will hate my brother.
I will be like God.

We will eat this bread.
We will drink this wine.
We will follow you
So that we will be fed.

Gives us Barabbas.
his way we will follow.
Your way is too hard.
We don’t understand.

How could You bear it?
To watch us reject You.
Over and over
We go our own way.

Our hearts we have hardened.
Our eyes we have sealed.
Our heads turned away.
Our hands we have closed.

For to answer You means
Giving up our control
Over life and ourselves
At least that’s how it seems.

How could You bear it?
To watch us reject You.
Over and over
We go our own way.

We take what You give us
Without ever asking
You what we should do
With the gift of our lives.

This bread is rejected.
this cup is refused.
Unless we surrender.
unless we forgive

Ourselves and each other
and learn to obey,
Become like Jesus,
A servant each day.

For Your body was broken
And Your blood was shed,
In spite of us
In love for us
And now we remember
In the cup and the bread.
What once we rejected
We welcome instead.

How can You bear it?
To watch us reject You.
How great is Your love
To wait for us so.
