The Way Out

On Your Word I will dwell
That my heart will be well
In Your praise I will live
That my heart I will give
For Your path I will pray
That my heart will remain

Open and free
Resting in Thee
Holy and clean
Healed and redeemed

With Your people I’ll bind
My heart and my mine
With Your Spirit and grace
My heart holds in faith
With Your light day and night
In my heart I’ll find life

Open and free
Resting in Thee
Holy and clean
Healed and redeemed

(The message of this Sunday’s sermon  was based on the scripture passage 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful. and He will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing He will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.”

Fallen Stars

Fallen stars,
Fallen lights.
Men and women
Lost in the fight.

Broken dreams,
Broken plans.
The future torn
By war’s cruel plans.

Wounded hearts,
Wounded souls.
On our knees
Grief takes its toll.

Gone from us.
Gone from here.
Love’s memory keeps
Them always near.

Standing Ready

The call may come
I’ll face a choice
Will I stand ready
To hear the voice
That sends me out
From where I’m safe
From home and love
To danger’s face

Will I be willing
To turn my back
On things I’ve planned
And then to act
With a strong spirit
With a whole heart
A determined mind
To do my part

Yes, I’ll stand ready
I’ll heed the call
I’ll do my part
I’ll give my all
I’ll face the dangers
I’ll bear the cost
Upon my shoulders
Lest more be lost

Do you hear it?
The strength of a people
In the midst of their weakness,
Heard in their music,
Heard in their prayer.

Poems for the Fourth

A friend asked if I had any poems for the 4th of July. I went through my file and found three. The first one I wrote the night after 9/11 and the other three were written at different times in the next few years in response to subsequent events.
